#investinedThe Invest in Education campaign made history today when they turned in 270,000 signatures for the Invest in Education ballot initiative. This is almost 120,000 signatures more than what is needed to get the initiative on the ballot, and collecting this many signatures in such a short time period is simply unprecedented in Arizona. Thanks to all of our members who gave up precious summer vacation time to collect signatures … this wouldn’t have been possible without everyone’s efforts. Getting the initiative on the ballot is obviously only the first step, and we still have much work to do to get it passed. But first, we can take some time to celebrate this historic accomplishment. Thank you!

NEA RA 2018 welcome signThe annual NEA Representative Assembly is underway in Minneapolis! Special thanks to CEA members Shaun Creighton, Sara Crismon, Gary DeGrow and Josh Martin for giving up a week of their short summer to represent CEA and AEA at this important event. For updates on what’s happening, visit the NEA RA website, or follow our Twitter account for a more local spin on the proceedings.

ballot boxOur Vice President runoff election has concluded, and Michelle Capriotti will be our newest CEA Vice President. Because she won the runoff election, Michelle has withdrawn from the Recording Secretary special election, and accordingly, Sharon Tuttle will be our new Corresponding Secretary. Full election results of our runoff election and special election are available online. Thanks to everyone who voted, and special thanks to our candidates for their willingness to serve in CEA leadership positions!

At the recent AEA Salute to Excellence two of our members (both media specialists!) were recognized as grant winners. Peg Newendyke of Santan JHS was awarded a California Casualty Athletic Grant that will benefit Santan’s Unified Sports program (run by Kim Welsh), and Carolyn McCleary of Auxier Elementary was awarded an AEA Diversity Grant to purchase picture books that will promote awareness, acceptance, and advocacy for all of the students at Auxier. Congratulations to both Peg and Carolyn for taking advantage of their membership and serving their students!

You might recall that on January 30, CEA and VIP sponsored a forum that featured all eight candidates for Arizona Superintendent of Public Instruction. If you couldn’t make it that night, we have good news: that forum is now available online to watch in its entirety! You can watch the forum on YouTube using this link, or by viewing the video below.
